Dental implants are a permanent and discreet solution for replacing a missing tooth or multiple teeth.
The process of getting dental implants from initial consultation to finishing usually takes between four and nine months, but the exact time frame will vary depending on your individual treatment plan.
In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know on what the dental implants procedure is, how to prepare for it, and what to expect during and after your dental implants have been fitted.
To get started, let’s find out what exactly the dental implants procedure entails. The dental implant procedure is a minor oral surgery and you’re free to go home straight after. It’s important to recognise there will be multiple stages to your treatment plan.
This will involve consultations to discuss your needs and exactly which treatment is suitable for you, an appointment to place the implants within the jaw bone, and the final appointments involve attaching the crowns (replacement teeth) to the implants unless you’re looking to complete teeth in a day.
We always offer a free and no obligation chat with one of our dentists first.
To get things started, you’ll meet with one of our implant dentists, Harry, Franco or Carmen for a consultation. They’ll talk you through what dental implants are and whether they are the right solution for you. Everyone’s dental implants are unique, and your journey to your perfect smile is too. We’ll take the time to talk you through your options, so we can work out the path forward. You’ll have the opportunity to ask as many questions about the treatment as you wish.
We’ll also get some information from you. Your implant dentist will take some X-rays of your teeth, 3D scans and a whole host of measurements to ensure no stone is unturned and we plan a solution that will last you decades.
We then like to think about things. At a separate appointment we’ll comprehensively run though your roadmap and we can start booking in implant appointments.
There isn’t too much prep to do for the dental implant procedure, however we advise you eat normally, and you may be advised to rinse with a special antibacterial mouthwash a few days prior to having your implants fitted.
Your dentist will advise on any specific requirements in the lead up to your procedure, but do get in touch if you have any questions.
Placing your implants
The dental implant procedure will take place at Smile Stories dental clinic and is generally a straightforward process performed under local anaesthesia. You’ll always be comfortable and completely numb throughout the implant placement.
Our team are lovely people (promise!), so if you’re feeling anxious before or throughout let us know and we’ll do everything we can to make you feel at ease.
Once the area is numbed, your dentist place the implant and the area is closed with sutures (if needed) so it can integrate into your body. In some cases, we are able to insert the implants and attach the replacement tooth (crown) on the same day, however, in most instances, your gums and jawbone will require time to heal before attaching an abutment which can take anywhere from 2 to 8 months.
During the healing period, you might have a visible gap where the implant is, however we always provide temporary teeth until you are ready for the final restoration.
The healing period is essential for osseointegration – the combining of the bone – which is where your jaw will strengthen and grow around the dental implant to keep it firmly in place.
Fitting your replacement teeth (crowns)
After the implant placement and once the healing process is complete, the permanent replacement tooth or teeth can be placed.
This process involves attaching an ‘abutment’, a small post fixed on top of the implant that provides support for the artificial tooth. Then finally, the custom-made crowns are fixed in place which have been made to match the size, shape, and colour of the natural teeth they are replacing.
Throughout and following the treatment, we make sure to provide you with comprehensive aftercare guidance to assist you in taking care of your new implants.
Following these aftercare instructions properly is crucial, and we will inform you of any necessary follow-up appointments to ensure the stability and well-being of your implants.
Once your implants are successfully placed, you can return home whenever you feel comfortable. However, it’s essential to take some rest until the effects of the anaesthesia start to wear off, which might take several hours.
After the procedure, it’s common to experience some mild bleeding, which should gradually get better within the first day or two. This is a normal part of the healing process, however, if the bleeding persists or worsens, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dentist who will be more than willing to assist you.
Caring for your new teeth
Your new teeth will look and feel natural, however, they must be cared for with daily brushing and flossing to keep them in the best condition possible. Dental implants are made so that no special materials are needed to clean them, you can clean them the same way you treat your natural teeth.
We’d also recommend quarterly visits for Professional Hygiene to ensure they stay perfectly integrated. Smile Stories offer a membership plan called ‘Implant Maintenance’ to do exactly that.
Whether you live in Winton, Sandbanks, Boscombe, Parkstone, Southbourne, Charminster, Throop, Highcliffe, Branksome or further afield in Dorset such as Dorchester, Weymouth or Sherborne, our dedicated team of friendly Implantologists will be more than happy to meet in person or online for an initial consultation.
In general, most people with good oral and general health are suitable for dental implants. It is essential that you have enough jawbone density to withhold the implants, however your dentist will assess your suitability during a consultation.
The dental implant process can vary, depending on the patient. After the implant placement appointment, it usually takes several months (typically two to eight months) for the implant to fuse with the jawbone. Once healed, the process of fitting the replacement tooth or dental crown can be completed in one appointment.
The dental implant procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort during the procedure. Some mild soreness and discomfort may be experienced after the implants have been fitted, but it can often be managed with mild pain relief.
Yes, once healed, dental implants work just like natural teeth, allowing you to eat a wide range of foods without restrictions. You can enjoy all foods comfortably after your implants have settled, usually within a few months.
With proper care and regular dental health checks, dental implants can last a lifetime. They are designed to be a long-term and durable solution for missing teeth.
